History of Future Milwaukee

Future Milwaukee was founded in 1977 as a collaborative effort among civic leaders of the time, including Betty Jo Nelson, Bill Randall and Dick Buchman, who identified the need for a new and more diverse generation of leaders in the community.  They initiated the flagship leadership program, Future Milwaukee, which has operated without interruption since that time, graduating a class of approximately 50 people each year.

Future Milwaukee operated as an independent corporation, with a board of directors, until 2005. To ensure the continuity of the program, Future Milwaukee aligned itself with the College of Professional Studies at Marquette. This affiliation allows Future Milwaukee to take advantage of the college’s expertise in adult learning, and ability to measure and monitor program results. An advisory council works with the college bringing diverse perspectives from the community that inform Future Milwaukee programming.
